Jeremy Deller was born in 1966 and resides and works in London. Much of Deller's work is collaborative and carries a strong political aspect, both in terms of the subjects addressed and in its contribution to devaluing artistic ego through the involvement of others in the creative process. Deller's work is meant to be experienced by and for everyone, inviting us to participate in a collective artwork where each individual has a role to play. His pieces, spanning across historical periods and advocating for free expression as a conduit for values and meaning, initiate a dialogue between cultures, people, past, present, and potential futures.
In a society that claims to broaden access to culture while continually prescribing a model dictating what is culturally and intellectually acceptable, Deller subverts these societal stereotypes by focusing on subcultures, folklore, and individuals.
