Poet, activist, and performer John Giorno became known in the 1960s
through his poetic innovations, including "Biopsies" and "Dial-A-Poem,"
a system of telephone poetry. A pioneer of sound poetry, he explored various media through performance, lithography, and silkscreen
printing (the Poem Prints). A key figure in the Factory, Andy Warhol's
studio, and a friend of William Burroughs, with whom he shared a
studio flat, Giorno demonstrated a militant taste for provocation in his
life and work. He inspired the most significant artists from the American
Robert Rauschenberg to the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, with whom he
spent the last twenty years of his life.
John Giorno passed away in 2019 at the age of 82.
