Often described as "the gatekeeper of '80s club culture," Maripol effortlessly captured stylish Polaroid images that documented one of the most vibrant periods in New York City's artistic history. As a designer, photographer, and filmmaker, she preserved iconic moments featuring the characters who frequented Studio 54, Mudd Club, and Danceteria, including Deborah Harry, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Grace Jones. Through Maripolitan, the accessory design company she founded, she created accessories she loved to photograph. Many of her designs—such as crucifixes, earrings, and rubber bracelets, famously worn by a young Madonna—became instantly recognizable classics of the era. Today, Maripol continues to capture Polaroids, collaborates with fashion houses, and regularly exhibits her work, including at agnès b. rue du Jour in April 2017.
