REMBRANDT (1606-1669)

Considered one of the greatest painters in history, particularly known for the Baroque period and the 17th century Dutch School, Rembrandt was not a painter of beauty nor wealth. His characters, sometimes indigents or worn by age, express condolence and humanity. He created hundred of self-portraits. It is during one of her numerous journeys that agnès b. visited Rembrandt’s house in Amsterdam and found one of his self-portraits from 1628 on a postcard. Struck by the beauty of this painting, which represents a cheerful, young person, quite uncommon at that time, agnès looked for this artwork and discovered that it was in the Getty Museum, which authorized its reproduction on a T-shirt for her Artist's T-shirt collection. For agnès b. it was very interesting to see a young person from the 17th century depicting himself, long before the modern day selfie frenzy. It inspired her to think... "all the greats were once young."
