20 november 2024

agnès b. presents a new exhibition dedicated to the work of Harmony Korine, of which she owns the largest collection in the world. This retrospective exhibition - the first solo show in agnès b.’s collection hosted at La Fab. - celebrates the artistic complicity between Harmony Korine and agnès b. that has lasted for over 25 years.

"There is something between us, we become children together. It's not about support, it's about friendship"

"I liked her immediately; there was something special about her. She's like a kindred spirit or something; very sensitive with artists"

A long lasting friendship

agnès b. and Harmony Korine's meeting feels inevitable. It took place in 1999 at la Mostra de Venise thanks to his film 'Julien Donkey Boy' (Love Streams agnès b. Productions managed the subtitling for its French release). This event marked the beginning of a close friendship and numerous artistic collaborations that continue to this day.

That same year, agnès b. and Hans Ulrich Obrist invited Harmony Korine for issue #12 of Point d'Ironie, agnès b, Christian Boltanski, and Hans Ulrich Obrist's blank slate periodical created in 1997. A few months later, in 2000, the Galerie du Jour agnès b., the historic gallery founded by agnès b. in 1984, hosted Harmony Korine's first solo exhibition, 'The Sigil of the Cloven Hoof Marks Thy Path'.

About Harmony Korine

Harmony Korine, born in 1973 in Bolinas, California, is mostly known for his films, notably 'Gummo' and 'Spring Breakers'. He is a staple of 1990s underground culture and American independent cinema. As a multidisciplinary artist—both filmmaker and writer as well as visual artist—his work resists categorization.

His work, deliberately erratic whilst both figurative and abstract, blurs boundaries to simultaneously attract and repel viewers, plunging them into an atmosphere both hypnotic and surreal. Over the past 30 years, Harmony Korine's practice has been defined by his innovative approach and bold exploration of the boundaries between painting, cinema, and other forms of expression. Often inspired by contemporary culture and elements of daily life, Harmony Korine creates work that challenges aesthetic and social norms.

His creations, whether films or paintings, blend elements of fiction and reality, building an atmosphere that is both playful and unsettling. By playing with themes of the absurd and the ephemeral, he invites viewers to question their perceptions of the world and engage in deep reflections on identity, society, and art itself. This distinctive approach makes Harmony Korine an essential artist of our time, capable of capturing the complexity of human emotions through a resolutely contemporary aesthetic. Today, he is regarded as one of the most influential voices of his generation, and continues to create works that challenge and inspire.
